Status of licences issued to portfolio managers and trustees

Since the beginning of 2020, portfolio managers and trustees operating on a commercial basis have needed a licence. By the end of February 2025, FINMA has finished processing the majority of the 1,699 applications received by the end of 2022.
The licensed institutions have already reported a number of changes that required FINMA’s prior approval. A total of 3,221 change requests were received. In the future, FINMA expects to receive around 1,700 change requests per year.
FINMA guidance on governance and risk management when using artificial intelligence

On 18 December 2024, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA published its guidance on governance and risk management when using artificial intelligence (AI).
FINMA draws attention to the risks associated with the use of AI, especially operational risks, data-related risks, IT and cyber risks, increasing third-party dependencies as well as legal and reputational risks, and describes its observations from ongoing supervision.
FINMA Risk Monitor 2024: Principal risks for the financial sector and uncertainties due to geopolitical tensions

On 18 November 2024, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA published its 2024 Risk Monitor, in which it identifies nine significant risks for the financial sector. In times of heightened geopolitical tensions, FINMA has also identified increased risks in the area of sanctions and in the number of cyberattacks, particularly via third parties.
The principal risks addressed by FINMA in the 2024 Risk Monitor are both financial and non-financial in nature.
The principal financial risks addressed by FINMA in the 2024 Risk Monitor are credit risks associated with real estate and mortgages, credit risks associated with other loans, credit spread risks, liquidity and funding risks.
On the non-financial side, they are risks of sanctions, risks due to restrictions on cross-border market access, risks in the area of combating money laundering, risks associated with the outsourcing of business activities and risks resulting from cyberattacks.
